Games to Teach how to get them started

Every time you play catch or baseball in general have fun and show your child a good time. If he isn't having fun then change games or even sports for a while. Interst is needed and patience is required!

Playing Catch

While playing catch call out things like "first base!" throw it to "First Base". While calling this out move to your right so as to help him anticipate fielding and turning to 1st. Hold your gove out like a target as a normal 1st basemen should so he feels like he is in the game.

If the child misses the ball the runner goes to 2nd.... continue to call out....

If the child stops the ball and makes a good throw its up to you how much to pick apart his form and fielding ability as to whether or not the runner gets called out or not.

Obvioulsy if he catches the ball on the fly its an out. Yell "OUT!" to keep him having funI

If he stops the ball but it drops continue to first becasue he made a good stop but needs to finish the play...

Pitch backs all age usage

These are great for older kids (8-10 years old) but for the young 6 year old its often not even possible for him to get a good enough throw for it to pitch it back. So use this simple game I came up with.

Have your child stand in a good position to catch a ball off the pitch back and you stand about 5-10 feet behind him depending on his skill level.

You throw the ball against the pitch-back so your child can catch it. Throw grounders, pop flies, and line drive shots.

The rules go like this. Every time theh ball is caught its an out. If the ball is stoped but not caught it is considered a stop and no points are awarded. If it is a miss the other person gets the points.

  • Example my son David catches the ball. (1out)
  • Next pitch he lets go between his legs. (1run for me)
  • Next he nocks it down but it drops from his glove. (no runs or outs)
  • Next pitch goes right by him and i catch it. (1 out for me)

All he has to do is touch the ball as it goes by for me not to get a run. This makes it rather fair and you would be suprised how much fun it is. The hardest part is hitting the pitch-back!
