Time for Practice
I have several games and activities you can do with your child to help encourage their participation in the game. I will also share what you need to work on because at this stage it is important to understand who is really doing most of the work. -YOU are-
Starting them out easy...
Where: I prefer the basement if it is finished and carpeted. Key is carpet and warm. Preferably with a couch to act as ballstop.
Objective for child: To build confidence and to move his glove a little side to side.
Objective for you: The most difficult part is watching your child fail. So you need to learn to throw the ball into his glove! Don't expect him to catch the ball when he has never done it before... Follow the steps and remember if he isn't catching the ball you need to get better at tossing to hit the mark every time.
- The child needs to use a glove that falls open easily or simply stays open wide.
- You need to get on your knees and bounce the ball on the carpet like a bounce pass in basketball.
- The key is to have it bounce up to the childs head height and then drop passing right in front of him into his outstreched glove.
- The key is to find a spot on the carpet that you can bounce from that will be the same every time.
- Use a couch as a backstop, this keeps the child in a similar spot.
- Talk to your child and make it fun.
- Once he starts catching them - he's out!
- If he misses it call for the ball at 1st base. "throw it to first"
- If he doesnt stand up
